This is why may be IPL is the need of the hour.Cricket is magnetic but how long can a young executive working in an MNC devote a day or even 5 days to watch his favorite players battle out on a 22 yard pitch .
The Billion Dollar baby as the media call it must be the most expensive baby in the world and there is still skepticism in the Air as to whether the baby would grow up to a healthy adult .With Lalit Modi looking after the baby one thing is for sure :The baby would certainly be well nourished ..
IPL may hurt traditional cricket as many commentators say.However IPL is the only medium which can take the game of cricket beyond the Indian sub continent.
Cricket is now evolving into something which the people yearn for.When I was in school ,I had to take holidays so that I could watch my favorite player Sachin play against the invincibles Australia and against the minnows Like Zimbabwe..But what about my Dad.He was not only interested in Sachin play but also the analysis shows that extended the program by a couple of hours .However He had to wait for a holiday or a good excuse to get a weekday off .His passion for cricket is still alive and IPL is just the right form of cricket for him to chill out and call over his friends for a cup of BEER.
I am in college But Thanks to St.Xavier’s College which has turned autonomous and with attendance levels at all time highs I restrict myself to watching the India’s batting that is if I do manage a holiday on that particular day .IPL will certainly fill up my evening slots and make sure I do not hang around in the virtual world for too long.
Test Cricket has its own place and when the 50-50 format was introduced ,various purists of the game feared Test cricket would be endangered if not extinct .But Test Cricket has certainly lost its sheen although the hectic schedule has ensured that Indians and cricket lovers get to see a cricket match every alternate day.
However with increased cricket and with “DIL MAANGE MORE” attitude among cricket lovers ,cricketers are finding it difficult to stay in fine fettle and the fact that Zaheer Khan who after winning the MOS in England in the Test Series in 2007 and Rp Singh suffering from an injury adding to a burgeoning list of injured lise of players goes to show that Cricket is being served to satiate the instatiable appetite of the Indian cricket lovers .
This shows that Cricket in any form would be a major success and The Commissioner of IPL certainly understood the psyche of the Indian people as those who watches Test Cricket will not mind at all watching 20-20 cricket although 20-20 cricket doesn’t give bowlers much of a chance as bowlers need to contain the batsmen and freeze the scoring rate if possible rather than going after wickets.
Imagine this :M Muralitharan completes his quota of 4 overs in one of the IPL matches
His figures stand as 50 runs and 3 wickets in his allotted 4 overs.
On the other hand Sanath Jayasuriya gets to bowl and his figures stand at 10 runs with no wickets in his allotted 4 overs.
In an IPL match ,who could be a matchwinning bowler ..Muthaih Muralitharan might have taken 3 wickets but that seems to be pale in comparison to Sanath Jayasuriya’s figures where he conceded only 10 runs .
So the IPL tournament would certainly add new dimensions to a player’s game which could prove to be essential in the long run.
In 1877 Test Cricket was introduced ,1971 One day Cricket was unveiled ,in 2007 20-20 took off with the WC being hosted right after the 50-50 WC and as I am writing this on a momentous occasion in the summer of 2008 IPL gets underway.
Who knows within 2 days of the tournament ,I might be sporting a new Kolkata Knight Riders T shirt which I hope would define my passion better in a non vocal way.The IPL if successful could be a huge blow to the culture of movie goers as Malls might face a dent in revenues in the next 50 days.
